Nurse doing Housecalls
House Calls: As much as l enjoy days off as nurse, the truth is that I am a 24/7 Nurse for friends and family. I’ve receivedmore than a few phone calls from family members with health questions and concerns. A few times I’ve obliged request to come and visit family members and friends in their homes, just to “check-up” on them, often at the request of another worried individual.
Thankfully, in most of these situations, I am play the role of an educator explaining discharge instructions, lab value, and prescription bottle labels. I’ll help them set-up their medicines in one of those 7 day pill packs. Sometimes I’ll help them write down a series of questions or concerns for them to share with their provider at their next appointment. Other times I am just there to provide reassurance and be a concerned listener, giving my opinion that my friend or family member seems to be doing “OK” and advising them of when they might want to consider seeking further attention.
Many times in these situations, the reality is that there are a limited amount of things I can do to help them, clinically, while they are in their homes and when I’m not in a hosptial doing my paid job. I can take their plus pressure, I can explain medications and diseases processes, and I can listen to their heart and lungs. However, more than any actual clinical nursing thing I do, my friends and family are just appreciative and satisfied by my taking the time to come over or call to reassure them or clarify things for them. They are just glad to know a health care professional who cares about them, on a personal level.
